Easily recreate Barbie and Ken’s Pink Cowgirl / Cowboy Costume for Halloween with some Amazon basics and a few simple + optional DIYs.
The 2023 Barbie movie will forever go down in history as a pop culture phenomenon. Margot Robbie wore a whopping total of 40 different Barbie costumes, but hands down one of the most iconic looks is the Cowgirl Barbie outfit.
For the opening weekend of the movie, my partner and I love cosplay and were psyched to recreate these pink Cowboy Barbie and Ken looks that broke the internet when the paparazzi photos were first released. It’s super easy to get these pieces together!
Below is a roundup of what you’ll need for this pink Cowgirl Barbie costume DIY, most of which you can find on Amazon (or you can visit my storefront for all of the links in one convenient place). DISCLAIMER: this post contains affiliate links. That means that the price for you stays the same, but I make a few pennies to keep on crafting and baking 😉
For Barbie:
- Pink denim vest
- Pink denim flared jeans
- Hot pink bandana
- Hot pink ribbon (I used a recycled thicker one but Margot’s look uses a thinner ribbon)
- Star tassel earrings
- Blonde wig (unless you’re blonde already! I prefer dark rooted wigs like this one since I’m brunette just in case my hairline peeks out, but you can always go with a full blonde wig to match Margot’s look)
- Iron-on stars (or you can opt for temporary star stickers like I did, though some will fall off through the night)
For Ken:
For Both:
- White cowboy hats (set of 2)
- White cowboy boots (though we opted for white sneakers bc we were doing a lot of walking that day)
Besides ordering these items, below are the crafting elements involved – which are totally optional, but definitely enhance the outfit for more of a replica look.
Optional DIY Enhancements
Rimming Barbie’s Hat:
Wrap your pink ribbon around the brim of your Barbie cowgirl hat. Secure with hot glue and trim with scissors. The Ken cowboy hat doesn’t need ribbon – he’s just Ken.
Shaping the Vest:
The Amazon vest doesn’t have a v-neck shape like the original costume, so I used safety pins to pin each side of the vest outwards into a deep v shape to get a closer look to Margot Robbie’s cowgirl Barbie shirt. Hot tip: you can use some of the star stickers to mask the safety pin lines that poke through the denim. I also used safety pins to tighten the vest and give it a more form-fitting look.
Stars on the Vest / Pants:
There are two ways to go about adding stickers to the pants:
- Temporary Option: Stick on / peel off the stars with stickers or adhesive vinyl material. I opted for this so that I could reuse the pink pants in future costumes but without the stars. There is a high chance that some of the stickers will fall off throughout the day, but using a heat gun or a hair dryer and pressing down the stickers firmly on your material upon application will help them stick. I wore my outfit all day/night around NYC and only lost 1/3 of the stickers on my pants and even less on my vest.
- Permanent Option: Iron on the stars with heat transfer vinyl material. This will guarantee that they stay in place.
I used my Cricut to cut solid and outlined star shapes on holographic vinyl. I chose blu-ish silver as the main color with pink as the secondary color. I varied the sizes with the smallest stars on the vest, the larger stars on the pant legs, and of course two big stars on the cheeks!
Glam Up & Giddy Up!
Once everything is all assembled and you have your costume on, doll yourself up with some pink makeup. Voila! You and your boo have transformed into Barbie and Ken.
The Barbie Cowgirl Halloween costume is instantly recognizable and is guaranteed to make you feel super fabulous all night. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling who?
